The Soul of the Mountain
The mountain is a land of dazzling beauty that has always attracted and enchanted man. It is not just the inanimate reality we are used to thinking of, and if we are quiet enough to listen, it has countless stories to tell us.
The novels in this series have as their protagonists the nature and the people of the Highlands, the centuries-old existences of the forest and the brief lives of the people, the ability to live in harmony with the environment and a sense of community that is now lost. These are stories of those who have always lived in the Highlands, those who are returning or those who are coming for the first time, but the defining element is always the Highlands.
It is a place with a spirit of its own, not in a hurry and not overly impressed by the recklessness we humans often show; even when our presence disrespects it, it knows that time will set things right, with or without our permission.
It has the patience of one who knows that it has eternity at its disposal, or at least that which is granted to the fragment of the universe to which it belongs, and that is no small thing.
A novel told from the point of view of trees, long-lived, marvellous beings, so different from us.
But it only takes a change of perspective to discover that it is perhaps humans who are 'aliens', no longer able to communicate with their environment, of which they feel they are merely the rulers....
